What Is a Plankhouse?
Among Chinookan peoples of the Lower Columbia and Portland Basin, plankhouses were substantial cedar post-and-beam structures built for family life, work, gathering, storage and ceremony.
They were more than shelter: they were durable, communal places maintained and renewed over time — structures designed around resourcefulness, craftsmanship and continuity.
